Common Causes of Pain

Osteoarthritis

  • What is it? Wear-and-tear of cartilage, the shock-absorbing substance in your joints that protects the ends of your bones.
  • How does it occur?  Gradual wear and tear, post-traumatic (after an injury or fracture), repetitive stress, sedentary lifestyle, genetics, aging, obesity, and other factors.
  • What are the symptoms?  Pain, stiffness, swelling, and instability are common.
  • How is it diagnosed: A detailed history and physical exam is often adequate to diagnose osteoarthritis.  X-Rays help confirm and determine the stage (mild, moderate or severe).  Ultrasound and MRI may also be helpful to rule out other causes and confirm the diagnosis.
  • What standard treatments are available?  Activity modification, exercise and strengthening (often under the direction of a physical therapist), oral and topical anti-inflammatories, bracing, cortisone injections, viscosupplement injections.
  • What advanced, non-surgical treatments are available? Platelet Rich Plasma (“PRP”) injections,Therapeutic Needling (like Dry Needling, only better), nerve blocks, shock wave.
