Shoulder & Upper Arm Pain

Is Your Pain Actually Coming From Your Neck?

If you point to pain between your shoulder blades, along the upper back, or anywhere between the shoulder joint and the base of your skull, there is a good chance your symptoms originate from the cervical spine rather than the shoulder itself. If so, click here on Neck Pain.  If the area of your pain is along the top of the shoulder and/or the upper arm (but not below the elbow), see below:

Upper Arm Pain

Pain between the shoulder and elbow can result from:

    • Tight muscles (Myofascial Trigger Points)
    • Pinched nerves
    • Referred pain in the neck, shoulder, or elbow.  Referred pain occurs when discomfort is felt in one area even though the source is located elsewhere.
    • Myofascial trigger points and nerve entrapments are common causes.

Neck Pain

Conditions Treated

Dr. Mahooti treats cervical myofascial trigger points — painful, tight muscle knots commonly found in the several muscles in the neck area (between the shoulder and the ear)

    • Trapezius
    • Levator scapulae
    • Rhomboids
    • Scapular (shoulder blade) pain

Trigger points may be associated with cervical arthritis, disc bulges, posture issues, and muscular weakness.   Many cases respond well to Therapeutic Needling, often combined with targeted physical therapy.

Neck Pain Conditions Not Treated by Dr. Mahooti

If you have the following conditions or symptoms, they are likely caused by a pinched nerve in your cervical spine, which warrants initial evaluation by your primary care physician for guidance and potential referral to a spine specialist or interventional pain management specialist..

    • Cervical spine arthritis causing radiating symptoms down your arm
    • Bulging discs with arm numbness/tingling
    • Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve in the neck causing numbness down the arm, typically below the elbow)

If you have seen a spine specialist (physiatrist or spine surgeon) and/or an interventional pain management physician and have had extensive tests and treatments and no one can figure out the cause of your pain, he may be able to help you.
